Those pictures are amazing, DavidThanks for keeping this forum going. And, thanks to Kathy Goode for making me aware of the various outlets. Already, I'm finding alignment with both the yahoo group and this.  I'll be on the Alaska cruise!

Can any of you guide me on side trips to take?  And also, is it wise to just take a couple of side trips, or go on them at each port? I've never done this before - either a cruise, or Abraham workshops. I'm going to the Boulder workshop next month, then coming on the cruise.   Oh, and David, how do I load my picture on this forum? I didn't see a tab for that. Thanks!  TU

Welcome to the forum Sondra!!!

And welcome to the forum members Alaska cruise roll call (which I hope to "organize more organizably" :?:) shortly!!)

To upload your avatar, click "my account" above.
That will take you automatically to another bank of buttons under "watched topics" and there you just click on AVATAR.  You can upload any picture you have on your computer to be your avatar.  If you have any problem let us know.:)

Now, your real question which is a good one - about cruise excursions... there are SO many choices it's mind-boggling fun trying to choose, isn't it? Have you seen the list of excursions on the Holland America site? Click through from http://www.Abrahamm-Hicks.com
First click on the link for the Alaska cruise, and there you'll find links to HAL and all kinds of good stuff about the Noordam, the itinerary, the staterooms, and of course the SHORE EXCURSIONS!! :oars:

On my first Alaska cruise I did a flight plane trip over the glaciers (out of Juneau) which was absolutely awesome!

Lots of people sign up for an excursion at every single port, and some people don't go on any at all, prefering to just stroll aimlessly through the port of call towns, or to stay on the ship and enjoy what it has to offer.  So anything you choose to do will be great!  It all depends how busy and active you want to be and how much of Alaska you want to experience.
There are things to do at each port of call that don't entail signing up for excursions, but the excursions are very special...

I hope other forum members who have cruised with Abe will chime in with their favorites! Thanks for the question Sondra!!

Love and More Love,
Jody

Thanks! I think I added my picture all right.  Yes, I've been to the Holland America site, and yes, there are so many choices!  I definitely want to fly over something, and maybe sail through or by something.  None of the side trips are in conflict with workshop time, are they?  There is so much I'd like to do, yet I also want to relax. My job is intense, which I love, and sometimes I just need a break!  :windsurfer:

Sondra, you can sign up for any shore excursion without worrying about conflicts with the Abe workshops!  The workshops almost all take place while the ship is underway, not on port.  So no worries!  Have fun choosing and "excursing"!

One of my favorite inexpensive shore excurisons is riding the tram up Mt. Roberts in Juneau. It costs about $20.00 and you can ride it all day. The view is spectacular and there are lots of hiking trails and wildlfe to see. Here's a view from 2005:

i finally scrolled down - you guys are moving things around on me. i'm taking this from the other post and moving it here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And anyone, is it the case that there is always something you can get to from the port more or less on foot?  Or are there some ports where if you're going to do anything, you have to go on an excursion.  Thanks.  ::flowers

Bec, if you do decide on an excursion try to book it soon. if you see one that really rings your bells, grab it.

in juneau, with the bus ride to the glacier center ($12) and the tram ($25) up mt roberts, those are two inexpensive ways to spend a lot of time in juneau and see some great scenery.

in sitka there is the fantastic national forest (free) with mostly flat, very well groomed trails and lots of totem poles. this forest is right on the coastline and the tide will be out, way out when we get there and you can walk on the rocks and see the eagles in the trees and the little creatures that the tide uncovers. you can also visit the raptor center which is also free unless you enter the building for a very small fee. you can see eagles and owls and hawks and so on up close outside of the building and there is a very nice waterway that flows through the area - the indian river. there are some short trails around the raptor center also. there is also a dormant volcano that we'll be able to see from the ship in sitka - mt. edgecum.

in ketchikan, i have not yet found an extraordinary scenic attraction for free. i have walked the streets and taken some nice photos of MY ship and enjoyed myself for the sake of just being there but i decided after last year of just walking around that since ketchikan is the last alaska port for this cruise that i'm going to do something "more" this year. in 2004 i did the misty fjords flight and landing on a lake and it was breathtaking!  in 2005 i did the misty fjords boat cruise and my pictures as you can see show some amazing sights. so this year i'm doing a rain forest sanctuary hike to see the wildlife gather around the salmon that will be running in the area.

note about the lumberjack show (Jody). you may want  to consider booking this show through holland america as it can sell out easily to the walk up customers in port. this is not from personal experience, but from a review i read somedamwhere. :)

victoria is not alaska, it is a big pile of crap city. just kidding!  wanted to see if you were still awake. last year i walked along the coastline and over to beacon hill park where they have peacocks and some other animals but the zoo part of it was closed by the time we got there. it's nice right downtown too. the empress hotel has a lot of flower beds and the capitol building is impressive in the right lighting and there are also some very tall totem poles in the area. i think you can find some rather inexpensive tours in victoria on the holland america site. i just have not considered any of them strongly yet. i think victoria is my "winding down" stop of the cruise ::petcat

and i think this is my winding down of this post  :D

I just finally booked my excursions last night. Decided to do a floatplane over the ice in Juneau and the wilderness boat ride out of Ketchikan. I figure I can walk around other places, or sign on later for other tours. I was terribly tempted to do a kayak trip, but I want to make sure my ankle is 100% (I sprained it) before signing on to do anything strenuous.  It's good to know there is some coastline walking I can do in Sitka. I'd also like to do a little shopping for my co-workers who are covering for me.  I'll be on the tour seemingly the whole time we're in Ketchikan, so I'm hoping there are some nice inexpensive options in Sitka or Victoria?  This is my first cruise, period, so it took me a while to feel into the trips I wanted to do. I love seeing wildlife, and the floatplane in Ketchikan would fly over that. I like the idea of seeing the rocks, the ice, and the animals up close.  I'm hoping that flying over the glaciers near Juneau will suffice for the "breathtaking" views on this trip.  I'm also a storyteller, and the boat trip talks about hearing a storyteller. So, I'll get something for my "side" profession, as well. I want to gather some stories, if possible, about the area.  Are there other options for something like that? Thanks!

Storydrum wrote:  Decided to do a floatplane over the ice in Juneau and the wilderness boat ride out of Ketchikan. Jody may have done the same one (hint hint - Jody speak).  you can see my pictures on my home page - click on 2004 juneau excursion - a helicopter flight and landing on mendenhall glacier/walk around for 25 minutes on the glacier.  the 2005 juneau excursion was helicopter flight and landing on mendenhall for a 2 hour trek on the uneven terrain of the glacier (outstanding). for both flights the sights were amazing once you get above the mountains and see just how vast it is. it's more than just a straight flight to the glacier. sometimes they will fly up glacier valleys looking for bears and goats etc. in the 2006 juneau excursion folder you will see pictures of the taku glacier lodge flight/feast. we flew over four glaciers and then landed in the river across from hole in the wall glacier and had a super salmon feast in this wilderness setting and you can see i got some shots of a bear. just flying over the glaciers is amazing enough as Jody will attest to. before or after your excursion you will probably have time to take the bus to mendenhall glacier or go up the mt roberts tram or go into juneau for your shopping.   I'd also like to do a little shopping for my co-workers who are covering for me.  I'll be on the tour seemingly the whole time we're in Ketchikan, so I'm hoping there are some nice inexpensive options in Sitka or Victoria?  there is an extensive shop right on the ship. shops in sitka - a very short walk. in ketchikan practically right on the pier. i recall some very nice shops in victoria that seemed to be right behind the empress hotel.  I love seeing wildlife, and the floatplane in Ketchikan would fly over that.what is the name of your ketchikan excursion? glacier bay is supposed to be a great place for seeing wildlife. it's humpback whale season while we are there so how bout we make you responsible for attracting lots of breaching whales?  TU I like the idea of seeing the rocks, the ice, and the animals up close.  I'm hoping that flying over the glaciers near Juneau will suffice for the "breathtaking" views on this trip.  you are also likely to see breathtaking views from the ship even while eating in the lido buffet restaurant, the indoor pool area, the main dining room - windows everywhere. and we can even eat out on the deck in the open air. and the crows nest lounge on deck 10 where our abraham cocktail party will be is a great spot in the evening to relax in a recliner and look out the front windows of the ship which go all the way from one side of the ship to the other. a 180 degree view or at least that's the impression i've come away with each year. and i'm also counting on my first time to glacier bay national park to be breathtaking    ::bowI'm also a storyteller, and the boat trip talks about hearing a storyteller. in 2005 in ketchikan i took a boat cruise to misty fjords (see the great scenery pictures on my page) and there is a naturalist/narrator type that shares facts and stories of the sights.

if you have time in ketchikan you might try the whorehouse although i think they call it something else. miss dolly's house maybe. probably rated PG-13 stories there though. ::oops

i'm having fun babbling on and on about the cruises i've been on and the one coming up.

take care,

Rick

 I can take a hint....

I did do that floatplane trip, and it was absolutely incredible.  I took about a million pictures too, but I took them with my cell phone camera (please stop laughing! David has already made fun of me enough for all of you about my cell phone camera ::nod- I KNOW it's not a "real camera" - sheesh! Some of us are photo-challenged!! ::whacky) and in the two years since I have not been able to figure out how to upload them except to email them from the phone one by one, which is not going to happen people! ::LOL

Anyway, you will LOVE that excursion and take a real camera or risk being like me and having to live vicariously from other people's photos who are generous like Rick and David and who actually take REAL cameras and know how to use them!!

Sorry, Jody, but I've got to laugh at that one, too. ::devil

However, I won't laugh as hard as bec333, because last year at my very first Abraham seminar I was standing in line so that Esther would sign a copy of AAIIG (which I was giving my daughter as a college graduation present) when I saw that Esther was graciously agreeing to pose for photos with people getting autographs. I thought, "Oh no! I don't have a camera." Then I thought, "Oh wait! I've got my cell phone."

So I got a great cell-phone photo of Esther and me--which, in my excitement, I promptly deleted. (And I only realized that after I got back to my car.)

Sooo... the moral of this story (is there one? ::whacky) is that cell phone cameras can come in darn handy sometimes. You got your photos AND you didn't delete them! Plus, any time you make a call, you can be back in Alaska with the pressing of a few buttons.

Love,

Nancy C.
