Sondra,
It is very comfortable inside the ship. It's not usually too cold (relative) unless you go outside on the deck in the evening. I like to do that so this year I'm bringing a warmer hat and I'll have thin gloves too and usually a sweatshirt or pullover on top of a couple thinner shirts does the job. Most evenings we are cruising along and it can be windy at times which accounts for a lot of the chill, but last year was super! I forgot my jacket and didn't need it anyway.
I suppose it could be cool in Glacier Bay, it usually was in Yakutat Bay/Hubbard Glacier until the sun got a little higher in the sky. So this year I might intentionally remember my heavy flannel shirt because I will want to be able to brave the possible cold in Glacier Bay so that I can be out on the deck as much as possible for any spectacular scenery that passes by.
In a couple days we'll be down to a week and a half!

I just noticed that you mentioned your computer. I was set on bringing mine because I can't read my own handwriting, and I also like to write essays, poetry, songs, etc. But, I'm thinking about the hassle of bringing it now. Why do you bring yours, Jody, and will I even have time to do any writing? I know I can use the computers on board for checking email if I want to. I'm just ruminating about this. Yours or anyone else's thoughts on this?

Sondra, I bring mine to keep in touch with my business, my kids, (and now the Forum!) - mostly, I really have to log on at least once a day to make sure things are ticking for work. I really can't advise someone else on whether to bring a computer - everyone is addicted to their computers in a different way and degree! As for time.. that's really up to you. There is a lot of unstructured time on a ship, and it's your choice how to use it, so if you wanted to write, I'm sure you could...

So, Jody, you prefer not to use the computers on the ship to do your emails? Why is that?

Sondra, I'm one of those people whose "life" is in the computer..
Please don't use me for an example. I'm sorry there are not more people on the boards who have cruised before that can chime in here... but the computers on board do work for email - you can certainly use them! I take my laptop because taking my laptop is just something I do... I know.. not really an answer!

Hi!
Just registered today! I am SO excited for this cruise. This is my first seminar with Abraham Hicks and my friest trip to Alaska. We are spending a few days in Seattle beforehand with a friend which is going to be amazing.
I can't wait to meet everyone!

Sondra,
Since you're looking for input, I'll chime in. I'm bringing my laptop, but that's because I have business I have to take care of during that week. Otherwise, I wouldn't lug it along. Just me. Suppose it depends on how much writing you think you want to do, and whether you need to be in a totally private space to do it.
I don't have any specific knowledge about the Explorations Cafe though--like does it tend to be crowded or not, etc., maybe another forum member does.

Hi, I'm Evie and I'll be on the Alaska Cruise for the first time. Really excited. Since I'm Austrian and was born with little skiers on my feet, I will do the glacier trek tour in Juneau. Anybody on that adventure, too? Please find me at our first gathering at Crow’s Nest!

Hi Evie,
Here is a picture from my 2 hour glacier trek in 2005. In the picture there is a small water spout flowing from the ice wall and some of the trekkers were filling their water bottle and drinking it. I will show you more on the ship. It was amazing just being able to stand on the ice and even better exploring some of the uneven terrain and seeing small streams flowing ands carving the ice.
Glad you can join the rest of us.
Hey, Arnold is from Austria too! (Big fan)
I'll be back, ::handwaving

GEEK question alert!! I hope this is the right place to ask, but does anyone know if there is a subscription to wireless internet or anything like that we need to buy beforehand? Also, does the ship have wireless enabled? I'm getting excited... -- not about the geek stuff btw... but I have stuff I have to be able to take care of when I'm gone.

Time to share this picture of Mendenhall Glacier from last year. I took off my socks and shoes and rolled up my pants to cross steep creek so I could get these two ice bergs in the foreground only to hear people behind me and realize that I could have followed a path to get to that spot. Silly me. That water was cold! I'd do it all again though.

LOL - Laura, nobody is geekier than me unless it's David I get palpitations when away from a computer for more than a few hours. (okay, minutes, but that's so embarrassing!)::look
Yes the ship has WiFi but not from your cabin. YOu have to go to one of the public areas designated, but trust me those "areas" are lovely. The new Internet cafe, and I believe the Lido, are wireless areas. Yes, you can buy a subscription, but I don't believe you can do it until you are onboard.
We're REALLY going to try to log on no more than twice per day - AM and PM to check in on the forum and other work-related mail, but trust me Laura, I know where you are coming from. You'll have no problem keeping up with what you have to.
Hope this helps,

Jody
