David, when I saw your picture I thought the landscape outline in the distance looked familiar.  Mine was taken on 7/9/05 at 9:11 pm.  Maybe you can bring a small photo album on the cruise of others you've taken?

See you then,

Rick

"Photo Album"?  What's that?  Do you mean that pictures can be printed and put in a book?  I remember vaguely, like out of some long forgotten dream, when I was a kid my mom used to do that.  I didn't think anyone did that anymore these days.   I was a photofinisher for many years, owned a lab where the ancient process of putting images on paper was done.  People actually paid me money to do it.  Imagine that!  ::wow

Knowing our Rick, he wasn't exactly SERIOUS about the "album"... but hey, it COULD happen! ::LOL

Rick, don't worry, just say the word "Pictures" and David will have you staring at his laptop screen for hours!!  He's got a wealth of Alaska and more in there... how about Explorer's Lounge 11 PM... for "album" viewing????  (Rick you can bring your published copy of "Rick's Corny Rhymes")

Ah Ha!  So that's the ticket!  ::light

I've got your number David.

Here is a non paper involved image from the east glacier loop trail at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. A nice partial view of the lake I'll be kayaking in while we are in Juneau.

Glad you've got my number, Rick, you can use it or my email address anytime!  :)

I was marveling at your looooong list of what to pack for your camera, very impressive, and you mentioned me in it for additions to it.  Amazingly enough I have a couple of ideas.

You didn't have your laptop on the list to let others view your stuff (as Jody mentioned) !!  ....along with a USB memory card reader so you can share your pictures with others that have laptops (which is a lot of folks!), as well as blank CD's to burn your pictures to (1), as a backup to memory card failures or losses involving cards, (2) and in case you do run short of room on your cards (perish the thought!), and (3), to share with others by just giving them a CD of your stuff when you are complete.

Also, bringing blank CD's and a laptop to burn them is a good idea in case one of your dear photo brothers or sisters didn't bring enough memory, OR in case you want to get pictures from someone else's camera (like mine) for yourself.  As well as CD's it's a good idea to bring a USB thumb drive so you can transfer pictures directly to your drive or someone else's without a CD.

Yes.. I am digital fruitcake nuts about photos!       And, as Jody says....

So sue me!::LOL

OK, back to a more mundane question...What sorts of toiletries are there in the cabins? Shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, plastic hair bonnets to protect from the shower?  Shoe polisher? What? So that I know what I don't have to bring!

Then back to the camera question - I think I've decided not to bring my laptop, but I do have my camera, with two 520 cards and a smaller 125.  It was enough for South Africa, so I'm hoping it's enough for this trip!  I will also have my Treo phone, so if I get really desperate to write, there are those little bitty letters and something called Documents to Go on it, that I can, hopefully, figure out how to use...Or, perhaps a nice person would let me borrow their laptop to write, and a CD to burn what I write!  I'm just looking at my suitcase and thinking that there is NO WAY everything is going to fit!  I may drop down to one formal dress from two, people will just have to see me wear the same things more than once! :)

Thanks for the feedback!

Sondra

For your toiletry question, I found the below news release on the Holland America site:

Seattle, January 3, 2006 – Holland America Line is bringing the luxuries of the exclusive Greenhouse Spa and Salon to each individual stateroom with the introduction of a new line of amenities by Elemis Aromapure that once again defines Holland America as the leader in premium cruising.  Traditionally, the Elemis line of aromatherapy products could only be found in the ships’ award-winning Greenhouse Spa and Salon, a tranquil oasis of pampering, relaxation and the latest skin, body and hair treatments.  Now, guests can indulge daily with Elemis Aromapure’s “Time to Spa” miniatures in their own stateroom. The fleet wide roll out of new amenities begins with the launch of the ms Noordam on February 22, 2006.

“We selected the premium Elemis Aromapure line to complement our Signature of Excellence stateroom upgrades,” says Richard D. Meadows, CTC, senior vice president, marketing and sales.  “Every experience, from sleeping upon a plush Euro-Top mattress to indulging in the internationally acclaimed Elemis soaps, shampoos and conditioners, is part of our overall initiative to set a new standard in premium cruising.”

Elemis is one of the world’s leading companies in aromatherapy skincare and spa-therapies.  Each product is infused with essential oils and exotic plant extracts to treat the skin and re-awaken the senses.  Holland America Line’s guests will enjoy luxuriant and subtle fragrances in each of the Elemis “Time to Spa” amenities including:
  • Elemis Pure Shine Shampoo: Infused with the aroma of lime, basil and grapefruit, this gentle shampoo leaves hair and scalp deeply cleansed.
  • Elemis Pro-Vitamin Conditioner: A citrus experience that replenishes moisture with conditioning Vitamin B5, penetrating hair to nourish from root to tip, while detangling and strengthening.
  • Citrus Soap Slice: This clear pure Glycerin soap is lightly infused with the aroma of grapefruit, basil, clove and lime and promises to leave the face feeling cleansed and refreshed.
  • Sharp Shower and Bath Gel: This aroma-therapeutic blend of mint, chamomile, wild marjoram, nettle and thyme in a mineral rich sea salt base leaves skin tingling with vitality.
  • Pure Zest Cleansing Soap: Infused with nature’s own lime, clove leaf, lavender and rosemary extracts in palm oil; designed to inspire a new zest for life.
  • Vitamin Rich-Body Lotion: Infused with vitamin-rich wheat germ, carrot and sweet almond oil; a welcome treat for thirsty skin.
As part of Holland America Line’s Signature of Excellence initiative, the addition of Elemis Aromapure “Time to Spa” amenities is the latest in a long list of recent stateroom enhancements.  With the upgrades, each stateroom now features Mariner’s Dream Beds with plush, Sealy Posturepedic Premium Plush Euro-Top mattresses, 250-thread-count, white cotton bed linens, 100 percent Egyptian cotton towels and deluxe waffle and terry cloth bathrobes.  New amenities also include premium massage showerheads, 5x magnifying make-up mirrors with halo lighting and stylish, quiet, salon-quality hair dryers.  Guests are welcomed with a polished stainless steel basket filled with complimentary fresh fruit including a variety of apples, oranges, grapes and pears and each room features an elegant stainless-steel ice bucket and serving tray for use with in-cabin beverages.

As far as the 512 and 128Mb cards, if you don't have enough space there, I can probably burn a CD for you.  What type of memory card do you use?  I can cover all the popular types. I will bring blanks along.  The service is also offerred by Holland America, but it's $35.00 or so. (as I recall).

Hope that helps!

David

Thanks, David. I have an Olympus camera with xD cards.  Wow, lots in the stateroom. That helps with my packing! I'll still bring more than a guy would..I am a female, after all, but at least I don't have to bring the entire medicine cabinet! Speaking of which, I've never cruised before, so I'm bringing Bonine and those wrist bands. Anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

Sondra

No problem on the card.  That's what I use also.   Motion sickness is possible, but not probable IMHO.  Don't plan on it! :)  The inside passage is extremely calm almost all the way with land on both sides for a lot of the tour.  I don't know what to tell you otherwise, except some classical wisdom from my Dad:

Before you go on a trip, take everything you are going to take and put it on one side of the bed.  Then take all the money and put it on the other side.  Now take twice the money...

::money

...and half the stuff.  Then you're ready!

You guys have NO IDEA!  It's an established and proven fact that David knows EVERYTHING and can do ANYTHING!  ::hugging

Ask him here though people, because on the ship he's on VACATION!!  (That's right David, and in case what a vacation is happens to be the ONE THING that you don't know yet... you are about to find out!!!)

And I am enlisting everybody on this thread to help me make sure he actually "vacations" on his "vacation"!  He'll have to work as A-H staff at the workshops, and we can't interfere with that, but let's all plan behind his back to ambush him with a fishing net if he sits in front of his laptop for more than 30 minutes a day.  Do I have you all on my team?  ::devil
ssssshhhhhhhh!

But if I like what I do, why vacate it?  I am immersed in Abraham and all that goes with it all day long.

I'd never vacate that, would you? :exactly:

Rick or David or any camera experts:

I guess this qualifies as a packing question as I plan to pack my camera bag into my carry on bag: I am bringing some waterproof disposable cameras which use 800 speed 35 mm film. Will it be OK for them to go through the security check x-ray in my carry on bag or should I take them out? I've heard that the x-ray is not too strong and will not damage film and picture cards, but thought I would ask the pros. Thanks.
