I thought that since this thread has been dormant for a while that I would post something... anything. How bout an aerial view of Glacier Bay National Park.
There, that's better.
Now for the next order of business. How is it that Alaska which begins with the letter A and happens to be the title of this thread got bumped to page two!?!?
I know this may ruffle some feathers of the higher ups but I hope that you can see past this and still cruise along with me.
OK, so it's a slow Sunday morning here.
Having fun,
Rick Kaufman

Oh Rick! Thank you for that picture! It really started getting me into the mood.... has anyone noticed that now we can say we're going to Alaska NEXT MONTH!!!! (I know.. it takes very little to get me excited... )
Do you think it's time for another picture caption contest? I'm looking through my Alaska pics now to see if I have a likely candidate....

LOL!!! Oh my goodness - NO!
Rick, I hope nobody will take that seriously!!!
What shut the other forum down is not for this thread, but trust me it had not a thing to do with any pictures! OY! (PM me for the full story - Rick and anyone else interested, since it's off-topic for this forum - thanks)
Anyway... I can't find any more funny pictures! All of mine are "serious"... how about you?

Maybe this one is funny? Depends on the caption I guess
It's from Taku Glacier Lodge 2006

Just a helpful tip and also to get this thread back on the front page - you can go to the casino and get a cash advance that will be charged to your shipboard account with a 3% transaction fee (which is $1.50 on $50). At least this is the way it was in 2005. I didn't get any cash advances last year except from the slot machines!

I don't have a good reason for posting other than my excitement is building. I wanted to share this picture that I took on the 2004 cruise from the MS OOSTERDAM at apx 9:50 P.M. on the way from Yakutat Bay (Hubbard Glacier) to Juneau.

| Rick, Thanks for your great pictures! It is so much fun to look at them again and again and realize that we will be there in a couple of weeks! I was there in '04, '05, '06, and can't wait for '007! I know you'll have lots more great pictures to share. Better bring a couple of those 2GB cards. Any advice for aspiring photographers on what to bring in the camera bag?

Of course vmatch. Don't forget your CAMERA! Don't laugh . In 2005 I was commenting to my dad while walking through the airport how much more comfortable I was carrying my luggage than the year before when I over packed when I realized AHHHHHHHH, MY CAMERA IS NOT ON MY ARM! ::oops So now I have visions of this trip that I've been looking forward to for a year that was going to be so much about my photography experience, having to be taken with disposable camera's??!! (no offense to those of you)
Fortunately the shuttle driver was still there and we went back to the lot at the hotel and there it was right in the back seat. oy! oy!
ok, let's everybody calm down. I have a Canon digital rebel and I'll list what I bring.
And David G. please feel free to chime in here also and anybody else for that matter.
1. My Canon digital rebel (duh)
2. My lenses - wide angle/zoom
3. Extra battery packs and charger.
4. Plenty of memory cards.
5. Lens cleaner.
6. Thin gloves for nights on the deck.
7. A tripod is a must for me when using big zoom or wanting great depth of field in the Sitka National Forest and elsewhere. There are enough eagles in Sitka that I'm sure to find at least one that is willing to wait and pose while I set up my tripod.
8. My camera will plug into a television so I can view the pictures I've taken. Last year on the Westerdam the TV's had the accommodating connection jack. So, I'm bringing my necessary cable for that.
9. I have a dry bag that I carry in case it rains or I need to cross water.
10. Two different size camera bags. The bigger one holds the camera and extra lenses, batteries, cards, and the smaller one just holds the camera with a lens attached and an extra battery or two. When I tool around the ship I usually just carry the smaller one.
11. My lenses will accommodate UV filters and circular polarizers which can greatly enhance some of my photo's.
12. Remote shutter switch when I want to avoid a possibility of camera shake and I don't want to wait for the 10 second timer to count down.
13. Extra lens cap and cases for polarizers and UV filters.
I think that's it for me. Thanks for asking! I'm going to refer to this list myself.
Rick
And here is an eagles eye that I shot at the raptor center in Sitka 2005 using a zoom lens on a tripod.

| Rick, Thanks for the list. From viewing your photos I wondered if you used polarizing lenses (#11). I am not quite in your league with an SLR, but I enjoy learning from those who know what they're doing. The only disposable I am taking is a Fuji waterproof camera in case I tip the kayak over and want to get an underwater shot. Also I plan to get Jody1 as we raft the Mendenhall glacier in Juneau. I am bringing a 2GB picture card so I don't miss a thing. The Raptor Center is one of my favorites; all the birds there are magnificent. I have not done any of the photo safaris yet. I, too, have a shot of Mt. Rainier, but my wing span is much shorter (Alaska Air) and coming home, I managed to get a shot southwest of the three sisters. Here's one of my eagle eyes. Did you notice the talons on those raptors? I will check and double check my camera bag before leaving; can't leave home without it! Attachment: raptor 06.JPG (Downloaded 36 times)

Also I plan to get Jody1 as we raft the Mendenhall glacier in Juneau. May I ask what is your understanding/expectations of this rafting trip? Are you going simply for the whitewater rafting experience or for a combination of that and a proximity to the glacier?
Here's one of my eagle eyes. Did you notice the talons on those raptors?
The talons are so strong that if they grab a fish that is too big it will pull them under and they sometimes drown. Don't those stupid fish know eagles are endangered?
At first glance of your eagle picture I thought it was one of mine. It's a wonder we didn't bump into each other there.
See what I mean? ------>
